Transport to Askari

How do I reach Askari?

You will first need to fly to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo international airport and then take either a connecting flight or a shuttle transfer by road. Please read the following information carefully and contact us with any questions. Once you have booked your place, additional comprehensive information will be sent regarding the travel arrangements you should make.

For volunteers joining the project in 2016 & 2017.

We ask you to make your way to our pick up/drop off town for 2016 & 2017, HOEDSPRUIT, arriving on the start date of your project.

The only airline running domestic flights between Johannesburg and Hoedspruit is South African airways on their airlink service (http://www.flysaa.com). Please book to arrive on the lunchtime flight (SA 1227) on your Monday start date and depart on the lunchtime flight (SA 1228) on the Monday your project finishes. At OR Tambo, follow signs to terminal B which is the domestic terminal. You may be approached by someone, who looks official, asking if you are going to a domestic flight and whether they can show you the way. You don’t need their help as it’s easy to find on your own. Kindly decline and don’t hand over any luggage or passport. These people are not dangerous but they will expect a tip from you for their (unnecessary) assistance! From Hoedspruit airport you will be taken to a local shop for any snacks/supplies before making the one hour journey back to the reserve. Any volunteers arriving outside these times must please pay for a separate transfer as we only make 2 trips per month for volunteer collections.

It is also possible to travel by road using the ‘Kruger shuttle’ service offered by Ashton’s Tours (http://www.ashtonstours.com/cAt–ashtons_kruger_shuttles). This option is normally cheaper and you receive a discounted rate when mentioning you are volunteering at Askari. But, please check that the shuttle fits in with your flight timings to/from Johannesburg. It may be necessary for you to have a night in Johannesburg before taking the shuttle so take this into account when planning your journey. The shuttle leaves Johannesburg’s OR Tambo airport (or picks you up from your accommodation within a 5km radius of the airport) at 6.30am. It is then a 6 hour drive to Hoedspruit meaning you can travel on the Monday of your project start date and arrive in time for the Asakri pick up. You should get off the shuttle at Hoedspruit’s Eastgate airport where the Askari team will collect you. All bookings should be made directly with Ashton’s tours via their website. Askari will drop you off in time for departure from Hoedspruit for the return journey to Johannesburg airport at the end of your Askari stay.
