Invertebrate benthic monitoring at Askari

Back at Askari it was time to go through the samples and we found an amazing variety of benthics living in Pidwa’s water systems.

UGANDA – Gorilla trekking in the ‘Pearl of Africa’

Mountain gorillas can only be seen in 3 countries in the world. The remaining population of between 700 and 800 individuals exist in the forests and Virunga mountains habitat between the borders of Uganda, Rwanda and The Democratic Republic Congo

Overland trips through South, Southern and East Africa

A great option for lone travellers to see this great continent before of after their time at Askari

Capetown – South Africa

A trip to the Cape is probably the most popular ‘add-on’ that volunteers do after a trip to Askari

St Lucia Wetlands park – South Africa

St Lucia is one of my favourite destinations in South Africa, a spectacular combination of beautiful coastline, Lake St Lucia and the estuary which forms part of the iSimangaliso (meaning: miracle & wonder) Wetland Park. It was listed as South Africa’s first World Heritage Site in December 1999; recognition for the ecological processes, natural beauty and biodiveristy supported here. Plus…..where else can you bump… (more…)

There is a constant sense of purpose here, which feels unique to this place – the volunteers here are actually doing the heavy lifting (literally sometimes) and everyone can feel the common goal

The management philosophy at Pidwa respects the resilience and complexity of the reserve ecosystem and aims to protect these values with the least amount of human intervention necessary – it is an amazing place to be.

My only complaint is that I couldn’t stay longer!

I left feeling I truly contributed to the conservation efforts of the Pidwa reserve

The location in the middle of the African bush makes you feel like you are in a different world.

I have nothing but fantastic memories of a wonderful 2 months at Askari and I would recommend Askari to anyone who wants to experience Africa and come away having learnt so much

The programme was perfect for me as I always wanted to see Africa but wanted to do more than just sitting on a game viewer
